Interpretation Training and Coaching

Stono History Consulting facilitates fully customizable interpretation training workshops for museums and historic sites that range from one-hour webinars to multi-day, in-person certificate workshops. By working with you to identify your organization's needs, a unique workshop or training program is crafted from a full menu of options.

Ethical Interpretation of History Workshop

This fully customizable workshop is an in-depth examination of the principles for ethically interpreting history. The workshop provides a framework for interpreting the history and cultures of people whose past has not always been included, has been mis-represented, and may be a history of violence and trauma. It places approaches to ethically interpreting history into the overall context of history interpretation. It provides tools for the preparation and delivery of interpretation that includes collaboration with the people or descendants of the people whose history is being shared, both perpetrators of trauma and the injured. This can be adjusted from a 90- minute overview to a multi-day workshop.

Certificate of Interpretive Guiding

This course introduces interpretation of natural, cultural, and historical resources. For those seeking recognition for their achievement, the nationally recognized curriculum covers the fundamentals of thematic interpretation and basic techniques. Part of a highly regarded professional development program, this certificate is offered by the National Association for Interpretation.

Introduction to History Interpretation

This fully customizable workshop covers the fundamentals of public history interpretation. Participants discuss what interpretation is and its purpose, are introduced to the six principles of interpretation, the eight principles for ethically interpreting history, and various methods and techniques employed in history interpretation. This can be adjusted from a 90-minute overview to a full-day workshop.

Interpretation Training Program Design

Many museums and historic sites are challenged to prepare interpreters to engage in effective and sustainable interpretation of suppressed histories of violence, trauma, and survival. The need is often greater than what a one-time workshop can meet. Stono History Consulting collaborates with organizations to design custom interpretation training programs and provide coaching services for more enduring solutions.
