Stono Rebellion
The Stono Rebellion is often portrayed as a failed insurrection of people seeking liberty. But maybe success was more than just making it to promised freedom in Spanish Florida. Perhaps success included extracting vengeance, making one's way as a "maroon" in Caw Caw Swamp, or even death. By the end of the century Patrick Henry would declare, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Historians have been tracking the events of the Stono Rebellion for centuries, trying to place the day's events. Ongoing research has identified some of the places where the Rebellion unfolded with hope that someday all of the named places are located.
